This week I spent time in a few different areas - research, emails, phone conversations, and experimentation.
I researched some more artist who use ink as their primary medium: Aaron Baggio and Jason Sho Green were two of my most recent favourites. I posted some of their work earlier this week. It is phenomenal.
I spent time tracking down people or their contact information to set up interviews with them to discuss their personal experience of breast cancer to correlate to my project on my Anita Mase. So far, I am interviewing 3 women: a peer, a middle aged women and her daughter. I AM LOOKING FOR MORE, Dr. -, any recommendations?!
I spent about 1/2 hr talking with my dad again about Anita and trying to dig up more information on her. I did get some insight, so this is good, but definitely not enough. I am realizing more and more how I need women's input.
I spent hours working on photos and sketches for possible pieces I could use for my project. I started working with ink on one of the sketches... SO tedious and time consuming, but I'm excited about it. I want to try to put some watercolour wash(es) on it when I'm done to play with that affect as well. I also purchased some oil pastels about 2 weeks ago that I might bust out, but not with the watercolour... that would be a bad combo.
Right now, I'm thinking that I will take the struggle that Anita and several other women go through, and try to convey that through my art, but I want to use Anita as my muse (and possibly my eldest sister because I am missing photographs of Anita during that time frame of her life, and Amanda is a good replica). I wish I could be single it down to Anita's specific battle, but barriers lie in the way of that (most of her friends are deceased, her husband can't relate to being a woman in the deepest, most intimate ways, and her sons only recollect major changes: behavior, physical, mental).

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. - Phil. 4:5-9

2Cor4.16-17
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison...

Jason Sho Green
Aaron Baggio - pen/ink artist - phenomenal!

Aaron Baggio is a pointillist artist that uses successive layers of ink dots to create the illusion of depth and extreme shadowing. Baggio also dabbles in watercolours and acrylics to enhance the pieces, which is something that I am very interested in studying for myself right now. His work is raw, capturing genuine emotion. He has been able to work in a blurry space--somewhere between abstraction and realism and it's been quite successful for him, I think.

"take care my brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. but encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. for we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end"...
- hebrews 3:12-14
Yes Please. More of that.

Traveled to Hume Lake, CA this past weekend to visit family, friends, and little babies between the ages of 14-18. LOVED it. Got to spread some Love and be Loved by so many amazing people. It was super refreshing. Also, a few of us got to make an epic 2 hour hike with our geer up the side of this mountain and snowboard down. It was freakin' BEAUTIFUL. God's creativity displayed through his creation is phenomenal. I was flabbergasted by it. Brilliant... absolutely brilliantly done.

Most of my time (which wasn't much) was spent in conversation with family and trying to figure out how to obtain photos from my grandfather. I received a few from him this past week in the mail. Spent time trying to figure out how I could use what I have to create an interesting concept about the struggle of this one woman's life that ultimately changed her perspective on herself for the negative. Cancer completely destroyed her physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It left her dependent on prescription after prescription. She lost all her identity when she lost her body to cancer. My gpa wouldn't admit this, but after talking to my dad about it for some time, this is what started to come out. I tried to get pictures from my gpa from this time period of her life, but he told me that he didn't have any. I asked my dad about this, and he said that my grandma avoided cameras between her late 30s and mid 50s... it's true because every picture that my grandpa sent was from before that time or after... Soooooo still trying to figure out what to do with this information. I'm very intrigued by my gma's life and i'm very sad for her and the way that she negatively perceived herself. She felt ugly and kept to herself for a good majority of her life.

- This week I went to Michael's and bought 18"x24" watercolour pad this week AND some oil pastels to play around with and explore with the watercolour and ink. Might end up using them, but not sure at this point.
- Emailed and called my G-pa to ask him to send me more photos of my grandmother. I explained to him that I might be using her for my drawing project, and he was very excited.
- Talked to my dad on the phone a couple of times about my G-ma and what he remembers from his youth about her through adult hood. Learned some valuable insight on her life and why she was so anxious and and kept to herself. She relied heavily on anti-depressants after surviving breast cancer, but had tremendous surgery performed on her, destroying her female figure... or so she believed and therefore suffered mentally.
- started to experiment with different types of watercolor (cheap stuff and windsor/newton) and the oil pastels. they don't mix well together as a process... but I think the pastels could add some nice variations in the final stages of the drawings. also used a bit of straight black sharpie and liked that... maybe a possible material? probably not? we'll have to see what kind of style i want to take on this... more expressive or more realistic... i'm leaning expressive, but not sure. still playing with imagery and materials. would like to start nailing down images and start working on my final pieces within the next two weeks.
- Had an epiphany while researching more on addictions... starts in your youth (most of the time). Thought about maybe drawing children because they are seen as innocent and sweet, but a lot of addiction sites talk about how this develops in the adolescent years... If the study of my grandmother doesn't work out, I might venture this way. ??? NOT SURE?!
- My dad is going to send me my Uncle John's phone number so that I can inquire of him about what he perceived from his youth with my grandmother... might use him as a source for this project, but still not sure. Depends on how much I can glean from my dad.

Casi O'Dierno's Original Work

This girl is seriously talented in so many ways. She is a graduate of FIDM in Los Angeles, CA and is now working in the fashion industry in LA. I had the privilege to "study" with her from middle-high school and work with her at the cutest little ice cream shop in our small town in Williams Bay, WI. I think she will go far. Throughout the years we've been able to keep in touch. Casi is tender hearted and incredibly talented in the arts. Keep your eyes out for her in the fashion industry. THANKS Casi, love my earrings.
