Time Log 2: Drawing 2

total hrs: 15
jan 26:
- spent my slow morning at work (7-10.30am) constantly thinking about drawing 2! i got a couple of my compositions for my assignment knocked out which was awesome. i found myself thinking about my self and what i'm addicted to. thought about how it might be interesting to draw the same person over and over through the lense of their different addictions.

jan 27:

- spent 30 minutes talking with a fellow student about my concept and picked his brain about his personal addictions. asked him if it'd be okay if i used him for one of my subjects possibly.
- spent time working on my addictions list for 10 minutes(it's SO big)
- spent 40 minutes reading online about addictions.
- discovered watercolor artist, Cate Parr (10 minutes)- LIKE HER STYLE!

jan 28:
- spent 2 hrs creating different compositions for problem 2. only have a few keepers, but overall it's been fun. really enjoy this assignment.

jan 29:
- spent 2 hrs browsing the internet and reading about addictions.
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,986282,00.html
- thought of a possible title for my work... "to feel normal"

jan 30:
- spent 1 hr thinking about concept of my final project. tried out a sketch for possible "look" but didn't like it.
- spent 1 hr working on the homework assignment for tuesday. played around with some different materials and compositions to possibly add for my 10 pieces of art.
- spent 1hr looking at questions they ask addicts and started to create a list of 8 questions, so far, of my own today... i want to add to this list and then probably cut/revise the questions before i give them to my potential subjects.
1. age?
2. profession?
3. your day to day life (explain)?
4. would you label yourself as "obsessive" in any way?
5. what thing/thought/action controls/consumes your thoughts/actions?
6. how often?
7. do you feel like you need _____ just to feel normal?
8. has someone been hurt (mentally/physically) by your "addiction"?
- delved into looking at the brain for 20 minutes (need to do a lot more of this!). super interesting... may want to use something like the cranial in my final project... ?
- spent 30 minutes reviewing what i've done and trying to conceptualize it. still not sure how i'm going to portray this!

jan 31:
- spent 2.5 hrs playing around with ink and a brush on paper and creating compositions for problem 2. i have so much to explore and learn about pen/ink and watercolour. i am very excited!
- started asking people personal questions about the things that "control" them today...

"Teach the older women to live in a way that honors God. They must not slander others or be heavy drinkers. Instead, they should teach others what is good. These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children, to live wisely and be pure, to work in their homes, to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands. Then they will not bring shame on the word of God." Titus 2:3-5

art for art's sake

i am seriously loving my drawing 2 class!

Say Hello to Cate Parr

i am a personal fan of fashion illustration because i studied fashion marketing for 2 years before i decided that i wanted to pursue painting and drawing. so of course, i am a sucker for Cate Parr 's watercolour work. i think that her style is just PRETTY, and sometimes you need something pretty to look at for no reason than to observe the beauty. i am also drawn to her loose brush strokes and the electric blues combined with the pastel hues. i needed this today. thanks, cate! she offers original art, mini paintings and prints — sooooo many choices and they are all breathtaking. like many artist, if you want a custom piece, you can request it and she'll make it. sweet, eh?

Time Log 1: Drawing 2

Total hrs: 10

january.13:
spent 35 minutes on http://www.ffffound.com/ looking for inspiration for problem 1 (positive/negative). found some images that provoked my thought process. all these images were found on the website above.
images led me to 35 minutes of thinking. some questions that i started to form are why is one negative and another positive? who says? why? can these be intermingled?

january 15:
today i spent an hour in everything's a dollar looking for materials/inspiration/concept ideas for my final project for this class... didn't find anything too enlightening. i went here because i thought there would be random materials (for cheap) that i wouldn't normally think about to use. it was a complete bust.

january 16:
spent 30 minutes today looking at craft materials on the internet.

i thought these could be fun to use, possibly. then again, i want to be able to push myself and improve my skill level with drawing materials, so i don't think that i will head this route.

january 17:

today i browsed the internet looking at various artists and materials that they use. i came across fred pass, an artist from the 80s who primarily worked in indian ink and pen. i am very drawn to his work and the style that it is done in. most of is appears to be portraits, but there are some pieces of work outside of that. spent 45 minutes total.

january 18:

spent an hour thinking about positive and negative connotations today. found myself looking at addictions versus being responsible for a long chunk of time. researched addictions. read about the causes of them (loss of control, mostly). also read about responsibility.

january 19:

spent 1 hour today researching addictions and putting together a list of addictions. used the internet to help me formulate a list. i also wanted to know what the top 10 addictions are, and have a list for that as well.

top 10:
1. alcohol
2. smoking
3. drug
4. gambling
5. food
6. video game
7. internet
8. sex
9. shopping
10. work

next, i would like to formulate a group of general questions to ask people about their addictions.

january 22:
today i spent 1 hr brainstorming different ideas while driving for problem 1 assignment. still haven't reached a successful resolution for it.

later the same day, spent time talking with a friend about different ideas for my drawing project for problem 1. we talked about it for about 20 minutes.

january 23:
spent an hour sketching out possible conclusions for problem #1 due january 25th. here are some of my favourites. the one is a lady pregnant with a fish and the other is a "congratulations, it's a boy!" fish in a bowl... they humor me.

january 24:

worked on more drawings and ideas for problem 1 for 2.5 hours tonight.

Fred Pass

fred pass, i like your style. also, his concentration revolved around that of music, politics, art, and sports. at any rate, i'm finding myself drawn to the indian pen/ink process. i think i might have to experiment with this in drawing this semester... we shall see.

Non-Painting

non-painting has commenced. i think i have my material picked, but my content and subject are still to be decided upon. i have decided to use old puzzles pieces as my material. i am excited about this project. i think that i will do a lot of layering to create shape and depth. ahhhh.... goodness. this is going to be epic!

Cedar Shingles Recreated

so we ended up having 3 snow days in a row upon our return to spring semester. when it snows in south carolina, EVERYTHING shuts down. it's really weird. i'm not used to that being a girl born and raised in southern wisconsin. therefore, i was very bored for 3 days. with my spare time, i crocheted, drank a lot of coffee, painted, and made these little guys into something cute that i hung on my wall in my room. it was a super fun, quick creation.
materials:
- cedar shingles
- red, black, and blue acrylic paint
- random buttons
- black sharpie
- small acrylic paint brush

Once I did Visual Merchandising... 'Twas fun...

i used to work in this cute little store in lake geneva, wi called e. street denim. it has other locations in highland park, winnetka, and i believe white fish bay now. they have a website, but it doesn't do the store justice. if you are ever in northern illinoise or southern wisconsin, make it a point to visit one of their locations. you wont regret it. it's filled with phenomenal jeans and their service is great. their employees know their merchandise: how it wears, fits, and stretches or doesn't stretch. believe me, you'll love it! it's a great shopping experience all around.

have we digressed?

i think my great g-ma would roll in her grave if she saw the way women dressed today... then again, she might've enjoyed the freedom and diversity.

about a year ago, i received a box full of little notes...
these are the ones that made me laugh.

Good Morning; I Love You.

Fur fur fur

this mink jacket was given to me by a friend. i just received it in the mail a few days ago all the way from CA. it was one of her relatives old things and she didn't want it but knew i'd love it. i'm really excited about this piece. i also got a great full fur jacket from her. it's ridiculously warm. i feel like lucy out of narnia. so today wasn't cold enough of narnian apparel, but perfect for this little number. fur doesn't have to be for the fancy schmancy. it can be warn casually. i am loving it!

recycled art

i found natalie while i was snooping around looking at different blogs. she is a mother and a part time photographer in utah. if you have time, check her house on her blog(http://lehiwrights.blogspot.com/). it's so creatively crafted! i love what she has done here! when i'm done with school and have a little more time and money on my hands, i'm hitting up the second hand stores like habitat and i'm going to start creating! scratch that... i don't want to wait. i'll just have to start smaller and work my way up to projects like this.

life aquatic series

i shot a series of these photos for a photo project this past semester. the lighting in these portraits turned out way better than i had ever hoped or imagined they would. i tried to capture the every day girl... the imperfections, the reality of life, etc... but it's all beautiful.

girl in the city

this is actually a shot of my sister in chicago. i just love so many things about this single scene... but to name a few without totally boring you i'd have to say that i love the asymmetry created in the frame, her vintage/hipster style, and her confident but mysterious facial expression.

beanie: homemade (let me know, i can make you one!)
sunglasses: ray ban wayfarers
scarf: american eagle
jacket: second hand thrift store
