Time Log 14: Senior Drawing

I was more productive this week in comparison to last week, which is great! However, I don't think I'm going to have the total amount of drawings that I was hoping for in my contract. I had hoped to have "somewhere around 10 drawings" in totality. I think that I am going to have 8... 9 if I am lucky. But I don't want to produce less successful work just have the hopeful number that I created without knowing the extensive work that it was going to be.

This week I finished the sketch that I had started and I started another drawing. In total, I have 6.5 drawings! I know I can 8 by friday, but 9 will be a stretch, and 10 would be impossible.

Ahhhhhhh!!!!!! This week was completely unproductive and I hate admitting this! So, I'm basically working on a sketch for my 6th drawing, but I feel like I dropped the ball this week. I did not make the allotted time that I need to stay on track for my drawing contract which is going to bite me in the bum... lots of catch up work to do from this week of not being completely on top of things. I was caught up with senior show preparation and I got completely distracted with it. Thankfully. it is DONE, and I can pour my efforts into drawing once again, but I'm frustrated with myself for not being more proactive this week in DRAWING because we're definitely in crunch mode... especially ME!

This week I finished drawing 4 AND I almost completed drawing 5. It's so so so close to being done. I also spent time installing the pieces for my senior show. The pieces definitely compliment my paintings and vice versa. I'm pretty excited about the ending result for drawing. I feel like I get a better grasp of it with every drawing. I am far happier with my most recent drawings than I am with the first 2 drawings because technically I think I am learning so much.

Drawing, drawing, drawing! It's so good. I'm feeling productive and making headway. I finished my 3rd piece and I'm a good way into my 4th drawing. I'm really excited about this 4th drawing.

This week I finished the 2nd drawing and I started the 3rd. I am about 1/2 done with the 3rd drawing, maybe a little more! From last week to this week, if I keep up with the speed that I have, I should be able to complete at least 8 by the end of the semester, and maybe even more!!!!! I'm super excited.

Time Log 9: Senior Drawing

Well, this week was pretty productive, thankfully. I started and almost completed one drawing (my first final). I've also started a second drawing. I have a few minor touch ups to do on the first drawing, and I'm 1/2 finished with the second drawing.

I am working in charcoal. I played with both graphite and charcoal, and chose the charcoal over the graphite for a few reasons... it's messier/dirty looking - which directly applies to my concept, I feel more comfortable working in charcoal - which is critical considering our time line, and I love contrast - charcoal highlights contrast! I've been working all my compositions from the photos that I've already taken.

I am going to have to take a few more photos to get to the 8-10 images that I'd like to have by the end of the semester, which is totally doable.

Time Log 8: Senior Drawing

This week consisted of critiquing, photo shooting, and sketching. I tried to make my models be more specific in their facial expressions this time. I wish I had a better camera to work with... The iPhone camera is all I've got to work with... so, I'll have to make it work. I'm working on an 18"x24" scale, and I am enjoying it. OH yes... And I went back to working in charcoal and I'm loving it! Conceptually, I feel like it is more applicable to my topic as well. So, yeah, making some progress in the final goal direction. This is good and somewhat encouraging, but there is SO much to do in the next 6-7 weeks. Yikes. But let me say that I am very excited at this point.

Time Log 7: Senior Drawing

This week, my time was split working on 2 different sketches of 2 of my friends. I took their pictures a few weeks ago, and this week, I was able to work on creating compositions from my photos.

I drew them with graphite sticks because it is on larger paper. I am contemplating trying to do the same compositions in charcoal to see if I like how one looks in comparison to the other. I know that I like to work in charcoal already, so I may try to stick with the graphite sticks because I don't have a ton of experience with them.

I also worked on my contract for the semester. I am haven't narrowed it completely down to graphite because I could end up going back to charcoal.

Senior Drawing Contract

With drawing this semester, I would like to take the time to explore literal portraiture and symbolic portraiture. I will use graphite sticks (possibly charcoal if I find that I don’t like the graphite) on large pieces of paper. In addition, I will incorporate tracing paper into the pieces to create layering affects. This interests me as an artist and I want to explore it as much as I can. I will use techniques that I learned in drawing 1, but more specifically gesture drawing, with the intent to create more expressive, evocative imagery. I will use original sources from photos that I take. I would like to have around 10 images at the end of the semester.
The concept behind all of this is about sex trafficking. The symbolic portraiture represents the plethora of women and children that have been/continue to be sold into the sex industry globally. I have selected fruit because in art history, it is used as something that represents original sin and/or life. I see sex trafficking as something completely unnatural, and yet it continues to affect life after life. The literal portraits will be those of men who are consuming the fruit. In addition, I see fruit as something very common. Grocery stores are packed with fruit. It’s cheap. It’s replaceable. It’s easy to access… which is the case with many of these women and children.

Time Log 6: Senior Drawing

This week I took more pictures of men eating fruit. I was able to get three, willing models to shoot. I started sketching out a composition. I made my models make more "fierce" or "malicious" faces while they were biting into their food to create a more evocative image (hopefully). I know that I have the control of that in my actual execution of the drawing. I am using big graphite sticks right now, but I might move to charcoal. I'll see how these 2 sketches turn out and go from there.

Alright, besides the thoughts about the project (which is daily! It's crazy how thoughts about this thing can be so consuming), I was able to get some photography. I took photos from a willing male model that is completely unassociated with AU, which is kind of nice just to have new models because sometimes the same ones get tossed around in the art department. I started working on 2 drawings from the photos I got. They will in the end be combined to be 1 piece because of the layering. I am pretty interested in it so far. I think it has pretty neat potential!

Whoops. Sorry, Dr. -! So this week I spent time THINKING about the project, sketching more possible thoughts, and barely tapped into photography. I think I'm going to try to take my own photos to work from for this project. I THINK (I know, a lot of "thinks") that I want to draw fruit (and they represent battered women & children). I want to draw the same piece being eaten by several different people over a period of time! So... obviously, the fruit will begin to be get smaller and deteriorate. This is an attempt at a physical representation the inner psyche of these victims. I have some preliminary sketches started.

WAY WAY WAY not as productive this week as I would've liked to be. I got caught up in other projects and life and work and definitely put drawing on the back burner. I did some more brainstorming and I bounced ideas off some friends. Their input is valuable to me. I also experimented with watercolour and transparent paper. It was pretty interesting. I'm not sure if I will use watercolour... maybe watercolour pencils! That might be the next direction I explore. I am still interested in open spaces (like rooms) and ruined fruit. This upcoming week, I would like to dedicate time to taking pictures to work from.

Brainstorming, researching, reading, sketching, buying, and drawing was my week this week. I went to Michael's and looked for velum... they were completely out of white velum... so I bought the next closest thing to it, pink. I like the strength is has, but I for sure need to get white when they have it in stock. I continued to draw on my tracing paper. I drew sketches of possible directions. These things interest me in relation to human trafficking:

- empty rooms

- 1/2 eaten/rotten fruit

- 1/2 figures of females

- totaled cars

I know... totaled cars is kind of random... but I kind of like it. We'll see. Still working with them conceptually.

Time Log 1: Senior Drawing

Hello... back again.

Total hrs: 10

Conceptually, I spent time in thinking about.... my experiences and my passions.

This past summer, I worked with young, adult women who were trying to get out of the sex industry in San Diego, CA. Through this experience, I have become more and more passionate about these women that are worldwide, and revealing their story. It is a lot of the same, sad story.

With my time this semester, I would like to devote my work to these women. What I want to say specifically has not yet been determined. But I do want raise awareness about what's happening within US borders and abroad. This is a worldwide problem.

I did sketches of ideas and wrote out some different ways I could go with my concept (but my car was broken into on Wednesday night, and my purse, backpack w/sketchbook inside, iPod, and burt's bees chapstick were all taken!). I messed around with tracing paper to see how layering and transparencies came/did not come through. I used graphite as my drawing tool. I also spent time in Lowe's looking at possible materials, and have tracked down a dremmel for possible use as well. I don't know for sure my materials... I think I want to use colour this semester because I didn't last semester. So, that is something I am taking into consideration... possibly as simple as colored pencils.

This week I framed my finished pieces. It really has made my work even more cohesive just with that simple addition. I'm stoked. I also started/finished a figure piece and started another of the abstract pieces. The pieces are going more smoothly and quicker now because I think I have a better understanding of how the material works. I want to finish two more of the abstract pieces with this last week that I have.

This week, after some searching, I invested in some frames for my work at Michaels! I'm excited for when I actually get to put them in the frames, but I'm waiting until every piece is completed. Originally, I planned on having 5 pieces for my final, but I think I'll be able to have MORE than that! I bought extra frames just in case.

After speaking with my peers last week and getting their input, I decided to spend more time working on the stippling on my already existing pieces THAT I LIKE and that are strong enough to be in my final display. I also started a new piece this week. It is more abstract looking. I have a couple of these more abstract pieces that I'd like to throw in with the figure pieces. I think, and so do the individuals that I've showed this to, they add interesting visual elements to the whole.

With my remaining time, I believe that I will be tweaking my pieces and I think I'll be able to get in one more figurative piece and definitely another abstract piece.

This week I created and drew out 3 compositions. I worked on the ink application of 2. I also looked for more pictures that I could maybe use and I'm working on getting some of my older sister that I can tweak to use for my project. I continually am looking for more imagery ideas and inspiration for the project. In addition, I've started to look for possible framing for my pieces. I'd like to have them all nicely framed or mounted...

This week I spent time finishing up a drawing that I started last week and I almost completed another piece. I am working on creating my next composition. I want to redue some of the earlier pieces that I did in different styles to see which goes best with what (more options). So, recreating those compositions is on the agenda for this upcoming week as well.

Didn't get to spend as much time as I would've liked on the actual drawing part of this project this week as I would've liked... time was split between sketching, creating compositions, looking for imagery, and then trying to actually create... I almost finished composition 4, and I started composition 5. I also was inspired for possible imagery by Dr. -. I looked up some photos and printed them for my next composition that I will hopefully commence this UPCOMING week... yep... LOTS and LOTS to do.

Layer 2 - prepping for 3

The beginning of Layer 3

This project is a narrative painting in which we will apply 8 different layers of paint that tells - each relaying a part of your specific story or event. Each layer will be mostly if not completely covered by the next layer... I'm pretty pumped about this process. It's giving us a lot of room to experiment, but most importantly TO PAINT. You learn the most through the experience, and this gives us 8 different opportunities to create something on the same piece. LOVE it.

Kolby Wyatt

Kolby Wyatt, fellow student and friend, is almost done with his undergrad in Ceramics at Anderson University. His ceramic pieces are geometrically crafted. They have a futuristic element to them even though the process and material is old. He's incredibly talented.... not only in ceramics but also painting! This is a piece that he recently finished for our non-painting project. It is a large piece (3'x5' maybe?) constructed purely from old video game pieces, keyboards, action figures, digital cameras, etc... it's phenomenal!

This summer he plans to work at a camp teaching ceramics with plans to go to graduate school so that he can teach on the college level. Best of luck, Kolby. Your unique zombie, princess, sugar face compliments will never be forgotten or skipp'n out on class for bagels and coffee with Andrew and the iPad. You should probably just come back and take senior painting with Higgins and me.

these two vikings decided to ride their bikes for about 2 weeks all the way up into the canadian region. i'm thoroughly impressed with them (but i'm also bias because i have the same blood pumping through my veins)... everything they needed (tents, food, clothing, tools, etc) is packed on their bikes. they road and slept in and through rain, snow, and chilly temperatures... but they say it was 100% worth it. epic road trip, to say the very least, and a unique father and son bonding time for sure.

gosh, here is an amazing girl that loves and fears god so much. we met when she was a camper at hume in '06, went to joshua with her '06-'07 and became casual friends, and then i worked with her the summer of '07 and it's been so incredible to see her mature in christ since then. she has become more than a friend to me and i absolutely cherish her, her thoughts, her plans, her advice... just her. i'm missing her like crazy. she is an absolute encouragement to everyone she encounters and the word of god dwells within her and spills out onto everything that she comes into contact with. her passion to serve god is devout and genuine and extremely sincere. she is great.
